Billy Ray Thompson, Sr. was born in Michigan and is a third generation Baptist minister, whereas his grandfather and father were both pastors. Billy attended Michigan public schools, and continued to Spring arbor college completing a B.A. with a major in psychology.
Billy had some challenges with (SUD) or Substance-Use-Disorder resulting in bad choices. But he was successful in getting his life back together, and once again pursued his Christian ethics recommitting his efforts toward helping others with similar issues. Billy was licensed and ordained as a Protestant minister in the early 1990s.
Mr. Thompson was hired by the State of Michigan Department of Corrections as a Corrections Officer. He was promoted to Sergeant/Shift Supervisor and further to Institutional Chaplain. Chaplain Thompson supervised the religious activities of over twenty-five hundred men with ten different belief systems including three Muslim groups (Sunni Muslim, Moorish Science Temple of America, and Nation of Islam), Seventh day Adventist, Native America Traditional Ways, Catholic, Wicca, Jehovah Witness, Christian Science, Judeans, and a variety of Protestant groups.
Chaplain Thompson also recruited, trained, retained and supervised volunteers in the correctional facility. Chaplain Thompson continued his education securing his Master of Arts Degree in Pastoral Counseling and a Doctorate in Black Church Studies from Ashland Theological Seminary. Rev. Dr. Thompson retired after twenty-four years of service to the State of Michigan.
Dr. Thompson acquired his psychology license and provides a variety of counseling services in the Oakland and Wayne County areas. He is also an Associate Minister at a local Detroit Missionary Baptist Church where he continues to devote his life to Christ. Rev. Dr. Thompson is married with one son and five adorable grandchildren.
