Hi, I’m Sara (she/her). My approach to therapy is warm, honest, curious, non-judgmental, and above all, relational. My primary focus is on co-creating an authentic therapeutic relationship where you experience the safety, empathy, and trust which make room for experimenting with new ways of thinking and being. I believe there is no one “right” way to engage in therapy, just as there is no one “right” way to live a life. Sometimes we need to deeply understand (and mourn) the past, sometimes we need practical tools for navigating a challenging present, and sometimes we simply need space to be witnessed without having to hold it all together. I am interested in working with clients across the lifespan and with a variety of presenting concerns. Our work might range from open-ended “talk therapy” to more structured interventions depending on what works best for you. You certainly don’t need to come in knowing exactly what you need out of therapy, either: we can figure it all out together! My work is integrative, drawing from a variety of theoretical orientations including trauma- and complex trauma-informed, attachment-informed, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioral. I have clinical interest and prior experience in working with complex trauma survivors as well as with adult women with lived experience in the commercial sex trade, including trafficking and exploitation. In addition to counseling, I am a member of the Human Trafficking Research Hub at William James College, where I contribute to research on the psychological consequences of sex trafficking. I received my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a Holistic Studies specialization from Lesley University and a B.A. in English and Creative Writing from Wellesley College (Go Blue!). Whether or not we end up working together, I hope the right help finds you, and that whatever you’re holding grows lighter to carry.
Sometimes we feel stuck, overwhelmed, or anxious. We might notice patterns and struggle to understand them. Together, we will work collaboratively to build skills to best meet your needs, hopes, and goals while exploring and building insight to better understand yourself. Our work will support you as you navigate different life phases, relationships, and environments. I specialize in working with individuals traversing life transitions (school, work, moving, navigating change, stress), anxiety, grief and loss, familial or relationship dynamics, and identity exploration. I have extensive training and experience working with the LGBTQIA+ community. My approach to psychotherapy is relational and psychodynamic, while utilizing other modalities such as CBT, Mindfulness techniques, techniques of Grief Therapy, and Expressive Therapies when helpful. I have an individualized and strengths-based framework, recognizing the centrality of the mind-body connection and the importance of holistic care. I work with people across the spectrums of gender, race, sexuality, age, and class. I strive to create a safe and accessible space for all identities, body types, and abilities. I offer therapy for a range of experiences including: anxiety, self-esteem, navigating life transitions, identity, family dynamics, relationships, grief and loss, and trauma.
In my work I am dedicated to supporting clients who are facing challenges related to anxiety, depression, and mood regulation. I see therapy as an opportunity to identify goals and problem-solve the roadblocks that have stalled obtaining them. I believe that treatment is a partnership between client and therapist. Whether it’s identifying negative thinking patterns with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), or incorporating mindfulness, radical acceptance, and distress tolerance with dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT); the supports I offer are based on your needs and goals.
Are you looking for immediate support? Do you want to feel happier, less anxious, and more connected? Are you working hard to hold it all together and wind up feeling overwhelmed? Look no further. I am a warm, down-to-earth, CBT and psychodynamic therapist. I am active in session. I work to help you accept yourself for who you are and then gently invite change. My practice philosophy aims to "walk" beside you on your journey to learn more about yourself in order to build personal insights, to learn and practice usable coping skills, and to help you build a stronger foundation to engage in the life you want to live. Currently I am only seeing clients virtually. I am accepting new clients and have immediate openings. Please contact me at 617-855-5108 for a brief, no-cost consultation.

Hi! A lot of the students I work with have spent much of their lives being "the responsible one," who keeps the peace, reads the room, and puts everyone else first. I work with students who are navigating things like anxiety, burnout, people-pleasing, trouble setting boundaries, identity questions, and figuring out how to exist in spaces that don't always feel welcoming. Together, we'll sort through the expectations that have piled up, get curious about who's underneath them, and build the kind of confidence it takes to show up for oneself. I welcome students of all races, ethnicities, immigrant backgrounds, gender identities, sexual orientations, faiths, abilities, body sizes, and socioeconomic statuses. If you’d like to learn more or explore whether we’re a good fit, I would love to hear from you! You can email me at uma@shanmughampsych.com or call me (617) 990-9450. You can also learn more at www.shanmughampsych.com I look forward to connecting with you!
I help college students adjust to new stressors, explore and understand their evolving identity, and feel more confident in navigating the many transitions throughout and after college. Within all of this you will also feel an increase in your self-esteem and confidence.
Do you often feel stuck, anxious, overwhelmed? Do you struggle to stay motivated or constantly wrestle with feelings of guilt? Are you struggling to adjust to changes in your career, relationship, your home life or your sense of identity? When you are struggling with these feelings it can be overwhelming and you may not know where to start. It is time to start thinking about finding a therapist, another overwhelming process. When we begin to look for a therapist, we acknowledge that part of ourselves that is ready for change and strong enough to ask for help. Therapy can feel like a risky investment. Here is the promise I can make: I want to help you. I will be as thorough, inclusive, and insightful as you would like. I can help you to build skills and learn techniques to help make your day to day struggles more manageable. I have a decade of experiencing working at the top hospitals in the Boston area. We’re firm believers that you don’t need to wait until things get really bad to start therapy. Every person is unique, and therapy should be the same - that’s why we take a tailored, individualized approach that’s flexible to meet your needs and goals. The foundation of our work is a multicultural-feminist perspective that positions you as the expert of your own experience. We take a warm, collaborative approach to help you get clarity about who you are and how you want your life to look. We also integrate evidence-based interventions from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and relational frameworks. Our goals involve helping clients move upstream to identify and resolve systemic and personal patterns that keep them stuck and working together to find more joy. We also believe that the personal is political. More often than not, sociopolitical systems of oppression like racism, sexism, heterosexism, transphobia, ableism, and more directly impact mental health. As a result, we take an actively anti-racist, intersectional, identity-affirming approach with clients across a broad spectrum of marginalization and privilege. We specialize in working with college students, graduate students, young adults, and professionals in Massachusetts on a variety of common issues including: mood (anxiety, depression), identity development, life transitions and adjustment, ADHD, relationship issues, academic and career issues, and burnout.
Welcome — I’m so glad you’re here. Life can feel overwhelming, unpredictable, and sometimes downright uncharted. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where you can explore whatever you’re carrying — without judgment, pressure, or pretense. Here, you don’t have to edit yourself or hide your truth; all parts of you are welcome. I’ve spent over 20 years helping people navigate life’s twists and turns — from crisis situations in hospitals to everyday challenges in private practice. I bring deep compassion, genuine curiosity, and a touch of real-world humor to my work. Therapy with me is a conversation and a collaboration: you bring your wisdom; I bring attentive listening, honest feedback, and tools you can use in real life. Many of my clients are women, young adults, college students, and people at pivotal life moments who feel ready to reconnect with themselves and live life on their own terms. I understand how important it is to feel seen as a whole person, not just a diagnosis or a problem to solve. Together, we can slow things down, notice patterns, and chart a course forward — one that feels authentic, sustainable, and true to you. If you’re looking for an experienced therapist who’s supportive yet practical, warm yet straightforward, and genuinely invested in helping you live your best life, I’d love to connect.
