I specialize in working with anxiety disorders, self-esteem, and personality disorders; I also have the unique niche of working researchers/academics as well as those who have lived abroad. Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked as a researcher at Harvard Medical School, University of Pennsylvania, and as a Fulbright scholar in Budapest, Hungary, studying psychotherapeutic interventions for anxiety disorders and personality disorders. My work has resulted in 20+ publications in research journals and popular science magazines. Having lived in Europe for several years, I deeply understand bi-cultural and cross-cultural challenges. My background as an academic researcher also has shaped my approach, allowing me to connect with and support clients from diverse backgrounds in a meaningful way! I offer a warm, welcoming, and non-judgmental space where clients can feel truly heard and understood. Whether you're seeking clarity on what drives you, or navigating the everyday challenges that life brings, my goal is to support you in a way that feels safe and validating. Life can be tough, and our minds often create barriers that make it hard to move forward. Through therapy, my aim is to help you work through the complexities of being human - helping you better understand yourself and find ways to cope with the unique challenges of living in today’s world. I specialize in anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, depression, and self-esteem, including couples therapy. I use Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, EMDR, and other eclectic, related modalities and also work with Schema therapy.

I am a MA licensed therapist, with over 12 years of experience. I previously worked for a local crisis team and now run my own private practice. I graduated from Salem State University with my masters in 2012. I also completed a licensure program in school counseling. My main treatment areas are depression, anxiety, mood disorders, life changes, stress, and relationship concerns. My practice includes long-term supportive and insight-oriented therapy, as well as short-term solution-focused therapy and techniques of CBT. My therapeutic style is warm and active. I want you to feel supported, comfortable, and appropriately challenged in order for you to make meaningful changes in your life. My intent is to create a safe space where we can work together to address the issues you are facing, improve understanding of yourself, and help you feel less stuck in existing patterns.

College can be overwhelming: academics, social life, family pressures, and future plans are a lot to navigate all at once. My goal is to support students through these challenges by creating a space where you feel heard, understood, and empowered. Together, we’ll work on building real-life coping skills, finding your personal strengths, and making room for growth and healing, no matter where you’re starting from. I take a big-picture approach, helping you look at how different parts of your life, like your relationships, identity, cultural background, and environment, affect your mental health. I specialize in helping students manage anxiety, depression, and high-stress situations, and I’m experienced in offering calm, practical support when things feel like they’re falling apart. I also believe that connection is key to healing. Whether it’s getting involved on campus, leaning on your support system, or just knowing you’re not alone, community can make a big difference. I often collaborate with school counselors, doctors, and even coaches or personal trainers to make sure you're supported in every area of your life. Because mental wellness isn't just about getting through the hard times; it's about building a strong foundation for everything that comes next.

One of my specializations is helping students who feel they are on the verge of dropping a semester because of stress, anxiety, or other difficulties. If you feel stuck, overwhelmed, in a crisis or at a crossroads, or in any situation in which 50 minutes of counseling isn't “enough”, an Individual Counseling Retreat may be a good fit. This service was created in part to fill a gap in services between the 50-minute session and going into a hospital or rehab. But it's also intended for anyone who simply wants or needs to go deeper than the typical therapy session. A personal counseling retreat puts therapy into a different context: An inspiring setting with a lot of time outdoors. Time to walk and talk, rather than just sitting, and leverage the healing effect of time in nature. We choose a retreat center or other setting so that the process itself is uplifting and inspiring, both calming and energizing. The impact of getting off the grid and devoting time to re-grouping can't be overstated. The time frame of a multi-day retreat allows a lot of learning and processing in a condensed period of time, with a minimum of distractions. The counseling addresses your difficulties, but also focuses on positive psychology- the skills of thriving and well-being. It also integrates meditation, mindfulness, yoga, and healthy food. The one-to-one counseling allows for truly personalized attention and coaching. It provides the time and space to explore issues in depth, connecting dots and seeing new ways of responding. It's not a magic cure, because nothing is. But it is a unique and highly impactful experience and a powerful commitment to your future well-being. A typical retreat is 3-5 days, and includes mindfulness meditation, stress management skills, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), addiction recovery counselings as appropriate, and other evidence-supported therapeutic frameworks. MBCT focuses on empowering you to understand helpful and unhelpful patterns of thinking and reacting, and grow the positive ones. The work focuses primarily on the here and now, less on lengthy excavation of your past. The overall goal is resourcing you with new skills to better manage the stress and challenges you return to post-retreat. You come away with more than a diagnosis and a medication prescription. The outcome of a retreat is a new understanding of how your mind, nervous system and body interact, and how to ride life's ups and downs with more resilience. You leave with a post-retreat plan of self-care, which includes specific daily practices to support ongoing self-regulation and what you value most: Being your best self. As appropriate, post-retreat follow up with me is available. Clients who bring flexibility of mind- an ability to look at problems in a new way- and who have a love of the outdoors tend to resonate with this work the most. To discuss fees, location options and other logistical matters, email or call. Let's find a plan that works for you!

Welcome! I know that choosing a therapist is a difficult task and that embarking in a therapeutic treatment requires a lot of courage. I am certain that the warm, and nonjudgmental environment that I provide will help you feel safe and supported as you explore the problems that interfere with the way that you want to live your life. I am pleased that you have enough self-awareness to realize that you need to act now. I have over twenty years of experience helping clients better understand themselves, reduce their suffering, and increase their capacity for joyful living. Successful therapy depends on a good fit between therapist and client; it's precisely the quality of the collaborative therapeutic relationship that is central to healing. Hello! I help my clients find balance through maximizing their emotional well-being while also improving their nutrition. My specialties include working in the areas of eating disorders, body image, anxiety and depression, and sports performance. It is essential to practice self-care in order to have the energy, drive, and focus required to accomplish our life goals. Attention to health is vital, but if taken to the extreme, can wear us down. Preoccupation with food or exercise can distract from experiencing the nuances of life, as well as prevent the formation of meaningful relationships. I work with my clients to help them enjoy their food experiences, but also to utilize it as medicine to enhance well-being, perform effectively in school and at work, and enhance athletic abilities. I use a non-diet approach, focusing on assisting clients develop intuitive eating skills and increase mindfulness towards food and their body. Many of the students can sometimes feel anxious, overwhelmed, or emotionally exhausted—even when they’re keeping up with classes on the outside. You might notice low motivation, self-doubt, or that small things feel harder than they used to. Some students reach out during times of transition, like starting or leaving college, changing majors, questioning identity, or feeling unsure about what comes next. Others want support processing difficult past or recent experiences that still affect their mood, focus, or sense of stability. I also work with a variety of students. Some managing stress, anxiety, navigating trauma, or are managing physical or ongoing health concerns causing them to feel the emotional weight that comes with it. Balancing school, expectations, and your own well-being can be especially tough when your body isn’t cooperating. In therapy, we’ll focus on both talking things through and building practical tools you can use in daily life. Sessions are collaborative and goal-focused, helping you better understand what’s going on while also finding ways to feel more steady, confident, and supported. You don’t need to have the “right” reason to start therapy—if something feels off or heavy, that’s enough.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in diagnostic assessments and evaluations and psychotherapy. Within our practice, I supervise graduate level trainees who provide individual psychotherapy and assessment. We assess clients with a diverse range of clinical difficulties (e.g., Autism Spectrum, developmental/learning disabilities, psychiatric conditions, traumatic brain injury, ). As a clinician, my overarching goals are to help clients and their families assess for diagnoses that will inform treatment and advocate for supportive accommodations and/or services. I approach clinical work from a multicultural perspective and am strongly oriented with a humanistic, person-centered framework. Our clinicians bring experience, expertise and a team approach to diagnosing and treating. If an adult needs to see more than one clinician (e.g., individual, couples work), we work together to provide coordinated, comprehensive care.

Feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or hopeless? Emotions running wild? Past traumas haunting your present? As a trained therapist, I specialize in addressing underlying issues swiftly. With warmth and empathy, I'll create a safe space for you to overcome these struggles and transition from simply surviving to thriving. As a therapist, I act as an emotional support, teacher, and guide on the client’s journey so they gain the skills, insight, and confidence they need. I firmly believe that everyone has the capacity to grow and heal from whatever they have experienced in life. I am trained in EMDR which is a powerful therapy technique that can facilitate the reprocessing of traumatic or negative experiences. It reduces emotional distress and promotes healing, leading to improved emotional well-being and a greater sense of empowerment. I am also trained in IFS, which is a transformative therapy approach that helps individuals understand their emotional struggles. It views the mind as a system of different parts, each with its own unique role and purpose. By fostering self-awareness and compassion, IFS allows individuals to develop a harmonious relationship with their internal parts leading to increased self-acceptance, improved emotional regulation, and a greater sense of wholeness and inner peace.

If you are reading this, then you are looking for some help. I got you. Mind Matters Therapeutics is my brain child (see what I did there?). I taught for a decade, then I decided to go back to school to practice medicine. Best decision I ever made. The best part of all this? I know the ups, downs, inside-outs, stressors, and joys of being a student. I know the demands of college coursework. I have expertise in advocating for young adults in the educational setting regardless of the individual concern: Are you looking for continuation of care? I will pick up where your hometown doc left off. Keep you going strong. Are you looking for academic accommodations and advocacy? I will fight for you. And my paperwork is exceptional. Are you looking for someone to talk to? I specialize in trauma-focused therapy and OCD/anxiety type therapy. I can see you as much as you need to be seen, no limitations. Are you in need of just figuring it all out? My initial assessments are thorough; I leave no stone unturned. I take the time to listen to you. Always. You’re the captain of the ship, and you’re in control of your care. We will figure out the root issues at the jump. I got you. I will never dismiss you. I will be available to you. I will respond to your questions, needs, concerns, etc. in a timely way. I am on your team, I work for you. I sincerely care. I do this for my soul, not my pocket. I’d love to help. P.S. Don’t sweat the insurance. I know how to work with in and out-of-network insurance. My students pay little (if anything) to see me. Honest. Best, Des O’Doherty Mind Matters Therapeutics
