*I’m a therapist at Mentella Health, a tele-health group private practice* Welcome! My name is Zena and I specialize in working with depression, anxiety, self-esteem, interpersonal concerns, and life challenges/adjustments. I have a MA in counseling and a BS in psychology and over five years working as a therapist in various outpatient settings. My approach to therapy is integrative; I work from a client-centered/humanistic lens incorporating elements of psychodynamic, existential, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and compassion-focused. Therapy is collaborative, there is no one size fits all approach to therapy, therefore I tailor my approach based on the needs of the individual. I believe the most important element of therapy is the therapeutic relationship, therefore I aim to be open-minded and authentic in the therapy room. My goal is to help clients gain insight by providing a safe, non-judgemental environment that fosters acceptance while also encouraging clients to work toward their goals (e.g. balancing acceptance with change). My ideal client is someone who is curious, open-minded, and willing to explore new prescriptives and how past experiences might be impacting how we currently engage with ourselves, others, and in the world. Many of my clients report increased self-awareness, self-acceptance, and ability to understand, accept, and regulate their internal experiences. When I am not providing therapy, I enjoy being in nature/hiking, spending time with my family and cats, and watching horror movies.

Feel like you’re either running at 100 mph or totally crashed on the couch? You’re not lazy — you’re burned out. College can feel like a nonstop sprint: classes, exams, internships, social life, and the pressure to have it all together. Maybe you procrastinate on assignments, overthink every decision, or call yourself “lazy” when you’re actually running on empty. My clients often feel like they “should” be doing more, even when they’re already stretched thin. Together, we’ll unpack that pressure, figure out where the self-doubt comes from, and help you feel more confident without sacrificing your sanity or who you really are. In our sessions, you don’t have to show up with it all together — it’s okay to feel messy, tired, or unsure. You can bring yourself as you are. We'll figure it out.
College life can be fun and memorable, but it can also be an adjustment and lonely. My goal is to help through those adjustments and to always feel like you have a support system on your side. Her experience includes stress, anxiety, executive functioning, crisis intervention and friendship concerns. Therapeutic techniques used include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy and Mindfulness. Services have been provided in an individual, group and classroom setting.

I’m dedicated to supporting you in connecting with your inner world, understanding your emotions and experiences, exploring practices for embodied living, and rediscovering joy and play. My holistic approach considers the intersections of embodied living practices and liberation-centered care. Life can be messy, unpredictable, wonderful, and fragile – and it can also be overwhelming. I value opportunities to slow down and listen to our bodies, emotions, and needs. Therapy is a space where you can do that - and not do it alone. I strive to create an environment where there is an authentic and trusting human connection. Throughout the therapeutic process, I aim to help you recognize how relationships, family system, core beliefs, and lived experiences have impacted and continue to impact your sense of self, worldviews, behaviors, decisions, and patterns. As an Asian/Filipina therapist, I also recognize the impact of intersecting identities and cultural biases on navigating the complexities of life and mental health. I offer to work alongside you as you connect with safety, engage with emotions, explore defenses, build authenticity, and cultivate hope - all the while we both affirm your inner strength and worth. I primarily work with adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, identity issues, relationship difficulties, self-esteem concerns, life transitions, and women’s issues. I work with individuals with various backgrounds and identities, including but not limited to those who are in the LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities. I'm a Licensed Social Worker in the state of Michigan and a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). I hold a double major BA in Psychology and Biology through Hope College and an MSW from Western Michigan University. I have been working in the mental health field since 2017 and as a psychotherapist since 2022.

Being surrounded by other college students doesn't always protect you from feeling lonely or overwhelmed. College and graduate school can feel very isolating and challenging. Starting therapy can be the first step toward realizing that you don't have to carry these challenges alone. I am currently accepting new clients at Mindful Counseling, Standale location and via Telehealth. I work with adults seeking support for anxiety, depression, relationship and family challenges, emotional regulation, separation and attachment anxiety, life transitions, and identity development. I especially enjoy working with college students and young adults as they navigate increased independence, adjusting to college, academic and career pressures, and discovering who they are. Whether you're seeking support during a difficult season of life, greater clarity, or personal growth, I'm committed to partnering with you throughout the therapeutic process. My approach is integrative and individualized, drawing from CBT, DBT, trauma-informed care, mindfulness-based and somatic interventions, and person-centered therapy. I tailor treatment to each client's unique needs and developmental stage, with an emphasis on emotional regulation, self-awareness, resilience, and building on existing strengths. I strive to create a compassionate, collaborative, and nonjudgmental space where clients feel comfortable being themselves. I believe therapy is a shared human experience where we work together toward understanding, healing, and growth. Meaningful change happens through connection, collaboration, and a strong therapeutic relationship. If you're interested in learning more or scheduling a consultation, I'd love to connect. The Standale office is especially convenient for students, just five minutes from GVSU's Allendale campus, within walking distance of the Laker Line stop, and about 15 minutes from GVSU's downtown campus and Aquinas College. I look forward to connecting with you!
You don’t have to navigate life’s challenges on your own. There are times when the weight of stress, anxiety, grief, self-doubt, or major life changes can feel overwhelming, and reaching out for support can be difficult. If you’ve been carrying more than you can manage by yourself, know that seeking help is not a sign of weakness, but an investment in you and your future.

I am currently accepting clients on a short-term basis for crisis counseling. Sliding scale and pro bono services available. My availability is flexible and I offer in person (East Lansing) and Telehealth. I work to help people navigate their complex worlds in order to live a healthier, happier life. I believe that all components of one's life are interrelated. Stress, crisis, life changes and uncertainty happen to everyone, often without warning. When crisis or chaos strike, it is comforting to have someone listen in a safe, open, non-judgmental space in which you can uncover the inner strengths and skills you already possess. I work with clients to create this environment, through which genuine healing, change, and self-empowerment can occur.
