Therapists for college students near Durham, NC
NuMind welcomes students of all ages and backgrounds. We are invested in assisting with your healthy matriculation through your studies, and recognize that your mental well-being is vital to that process. Our owner, Dr. D'Angelo Lewis (Dr. Dee) was a college professor and advisor, as well as a Program Evaluator for UNC General Administration. He is very familiar with the rigors of higher education and the struggles that come along with the journey to graduating. As an undergraduate he not only attended school full-time, but did so with no home address, no financial support and with a toddler in tow. Imagine the dorm being your only home and feeding a child in the cafeteria! I promise that whatever you are enduring, Dr. Dee can relate and help you move your life forward.

You might be feeling overwhelmed, stuck in old patterns, or disconnected in your relationships—especially during times of change. Life transitions can bring up anxiety, uncertainty, and questions about who you are and what you want, even if things look “fine” on the outside. You may be looking for clarity, relief, and a way to feel more grounded and secure in yourself and your relationships. I support adults through relationship and life transitions by helping them understand attachment patterns and regulate their nervous system. Drawing on my experiences, including my time as a veteran, I blend attachment-based therapy with mind–body tools, informed by my yoga teacher training, to support grounding and connection. I'm here to fully understand your situation and assist providing skills, support or relief during these transitions and times in life. Please reach out and let's see if we connect to help on your journey.

ACT is an evidence-based treatment for eating disorders, as well as anxiety, depression, OCD, and chronic pain. For the past five years, I have worked in eating disorder treatment at all levels of care. I have 15 years of experience as an LCSW-C supporting, educating and holding emotional space for young adults and their families. I have post graduate training with a Certification in Child and Adolescent Therapy, a Certification in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and am a Certified Anxiety Treatment Professional. I am also trained as an ADHD Coach for college students and young adults. I am a Certified Mental Coach for high school and college athletes. I work collaboratively with young adults and their families dealing with issues of anxiety, depression, family conflicts, sexuality, and childhood traumas. I partner with students and schools to support clients with ADHD and educational issues. I believe in meeting the client where they are and looking for therapeutic strategies that fit their lifestyle and background. Mental health is very personal, based on client experiences. I see therapy as a tool to help client identify strengths and teach effective coping strategies and skills they can apply to their lives now and for future struggles. I consider myself fortunate to be able to work in a profession that I truly love and I consider a privilege to be invited into my clients' inner lives, and to travel this journey with them through healing, change, and self-empowerment. I see therapy as a process of identifying strengths and struggles and teaching clients to harness their own power.
If life feels a little like you're trying to juggle too many things at once, you're not alone. I work well with students who are navigating stress, anxiety, self-doubt, big life changes, relationship challenges, or simply the pressure of trying to keep everything together. Many of the people I meet are thoughtful, creative, caring individuals who spend so much energy showing up for others that they forget to check in with themselves. Some feel stuck, overwhelmed, or like they're trying to solve a puzzle without all the pieces. Others are searching for a place where they can be fully themselves without feeling judged. I especially enjoy working with students who see the world a little differently, including those with ADHD, autism, learning differences, and wonderfully unique ways of thinking. Together, we'll explore what works for you, celebrate your strengths, and build practical tools for handling life's twists and turns. Think of counseling as a space to unpack your backpack, sort through what's weighing you down, and discover strengths you may not even realize you have. You don't need to have all the answers—just a willingness to show up as you are.
Enrolling to college really does feel like being thrown to the wolves. While supports exist, navigating those can feel overwhelming. Let's navigate them together and to support who you are genuinely are.

Safe. Confident. Peaceful. Free. Empowered. I believe we all strive to feel this, yet at times life gets in the way and we feel stuck, unable to move forward. My goal as a therapist is to create a safe and encouraging environment, while providing you with the tools you need to begin the healing process. I believe in helping my clients find the answers they already have access to. As a therapist, I strive to join with my client to understand their path to success. Ultimately, a major goal is not to tell someone what to do but to help them decide what they want to do and how to get there. I look forward to working with you.
Student life can be complicated but it doesn't have to be. Navigating personal and emotional concerns and relationships while focusing on academics, athletics or work/family-life balance often requires support and patience. Some students do this well, while others benefit from someone from the outside who provides them with a non-judgemental space to sort through and make sense of it all. Together we will identify the source of your concerns, and how we can work together to make sense of the thoughts, feelings and actions which are getting in the way of your personal and professional goals. I have worked with college students in many capacities and hope that my experience can help me to help you find a way through depression, anxiety, stress or life transitions.
