You might be someone who wants to understand yourself better, strengthen your relationships, and feel more at home in your own life. Maybe you’ve been navigating transitions, exploring questions about your identity, or noticing patterns that keep repeating in your relationships or sense of self. You’re ready to reflect, grow, and take meaningful steps toward a life that feels authentic, connected, and empowering. Together, we can uncover your strengths, explore your experiences, and build a life that feels true to who you are. Whether you’re questioning parts of your identity, redefining your path, or processing challenging personal or cultural experiences, we will work to examine different parts of your story and how they show up in your relationships and daily life. I’ll create a space where you feel understood and supported as we explore challenges and their influence. Therapy can bring up a lot, whether it’s new or something you’ve done before. I’m here to help you make sense of your experiences, build on your strengths, and find ways to feel more connected, confident, and like yourself in your everyday life
My ideal client is someone who is dedicated to finding a way to thrive in this life. My approach uses positive psychotherapy to find those things about you that are special and help you to grow them. My ideal client is someone who not only wants to address the things that are going wrong in their lives, but someone who also wants to identify what is great about their life and find ways to build on that. Positive psychotherapy is about promoting your well-being as a whole person. We do this by defining what well-being is and looking at ways it is being achieved or not achieved in our clients. Additionally, we will look closely at your character strength and find ways of sharpening them so as to contribute to your overall happiness. Life is filled with joy and challenge. Our job as people is to find meaning in those struggles that make up our day-to-day life. Together, you and I will work to find YOUR meaning and to create strategies that will strengthen you as you grow and thrive in your life as you live it.
I see one of the most important roles as a therapist to be putting in the work to earn someone’s trust and walking beside them as an accomplice on their path towards growth. I don’t believe that people are “broken” or “need to be fixed”, but rather that somewhere within every person lies the capacity to generate change. I believe this change begins by finding someone trustworthy to support them through this process. And—that being kinder and gentler towards ourselves goes a long way to building the foundation for this change to occur. My experiences span across 15 years, with the scope of my direct work supporting clients in their exploration of gender expression/transition, depression, anxiety, trauma, grief/loss and more- all within Allegheny County. I am also happy to provide evaluations and letters for Gender Affirming surgeries, Green Card Status, and Emotional Support Animals. The world is an often hard place to be, and my goal is to create a space for softness to occur. To not only listen but to hear and understand. To respect through accountability. To address struggles through processing and also through action leading to systemic change.
Life comes with stresses and challenges, and I provide a warm, safe, and supportive environment to help you navigate through these hard times. My goal is for you to finish counseling with a set of skills that will help you feel happy, successful, and confident. I will provide you the tools that will improve your quality of life. I work with a variety of diagnoses, including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety. I can help with stress, insomnia, and anger management.
If life has been feeling stuck, confusing, or overwhelming, let’s slow things down together. I'm here to listen closely to your lived experience and the stories that have shaped it. My work is grounded in narrative therapy, which means we will pay attention to how problems have come to influence your life and how your preferred values and hopes might guide us forward. We'll stay close to what matters most to you, exploring what you want your life to stand for and supporting steps that move you closer to that direction, one conversation at a time. My approach is collaborative, with your voice guiding what feels most important. I ask questions that invite reflection and new possibilities, and I'm transparent about my thinking. If you want therapy that feels human, thoughtful, and respectful of your context, we may be a good fit. If you would like to see whether we fit, reach out through the contact options on this page. You can share a sentence or two about what you want help with, along with any scheduling needs. I'll respond with what I can offer and what next steps could look like.
Hi, I’m Shayna T. Sanders, LMFT , the owner of Courage to Heal Counseling Services. Life can feel overwhelming at times—whether you're navigating school, work, relationships, family responsibilities, or personal challenges. You don’t have to go through it alone. With over 20 years of experience, I have supported individuals through a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues, and life transitions. For the past 14 years in private practice, I’ve helped individuals build coping skills, gain clarity, and feel more confident and balanced in their everyday lives. My approach is warm, down-to-earth, and collaborative. I strive to create a space where you can show up exactly as you are—without judgment or pressure. Whether you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply need someone to talk to, we can work together to help you feel more grounded, understood, and supported.
I DO TELEHEALTH I work with people struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship problems, grief and loss and bipolar disorder, school/work adjustment and stress. You might feel overwhelmed and alone with so many obligations and responsibilities. Maybe you are under constant pressure and you don't see room for change. It's hard to see a possibility for change when you keep looking at the problem with one perspective, your own perspective. Let's talk about it, you are not alone. I have years experience in community health and private practice. I've worked with people at all levels of function, resources, financial support or crisis. The one true constant for those people I've been fortunate enough to work with is that personal resources are already inside them. Sometimes people have trouble accessing these strengths or they may be burred by noisy negative self-talk, worn out or unhelpful ideas about ourselves and other emotional baggage. I'm here to help so give me a call. I am currently offering telehealth sessions and this is covered by most insurances.

Finding a comfortable fit between you and your therapist is a very important first step in the process of choosing a qualified licensed psychologist. My approach to therapy involves working in a collaborative, respectful, open, direct, and warm manner. Since our past and present often weave together, exploring the present within the context of the past helps us to understand life patterns which may greatly impact one's relationships, career, and overall physical and mental health. Psychotherapy is not easily described in general statements. There are many different methods I may use to deal with the problems that you hope to address. Behavior therapy is not like a medical doctor visit. Instead, it calls for a very active effort on your part. In order for the therapy to be most successful, you will have to work on things we talk about both during our sessions, in between sessions, and at home. Psychotherapy can have benefits and risks. Since therapy often involves discussing unpleasant aspects of your life, you may experience uncomfortable feelings such as sadness, guilt, anger, frustration, loneliness, and helplessness. On the other hand, psychotherapy has also been shown to have benefits for people who go through it. Therapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, and significant reductions in feelings of distress. But there are no guarantees of what you will experience. Our first few sessions will involve an evaluation of your needs. By the end of the evaluation, I will be able to offer you some first impressions regarding our work together, including a treatment plan to follow if you decide to continue with therapy. You should evaluate this information along with your own opinions of whether you feel comfortable working with me. Therapy involves a large commitment of time, money, and energy, so you should be very careful about the therapist you select. If you have questions about my procedures, we should discuss them whenever they arise.

Therapy with me is a safe place to explore thoughts and feelings, gain insight into patterns, intrapersonal and interpersonal dynamics and to put that insight into action in your day-to-day life so that you are achieving all that you have set out to do. Get to know me In our first session together, here's what you can expect In our first session together, we'll start with brief introductions, then dive into the specific challenges you're facing. This will help me create a tailored plan for us to work through in follow-up sessions. The treatment methods and tools I utilize I believe in using an individualized and eclectic approach combining evidence-based approaches including cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, emotionally focused, mindfulness-based, and solution-focused schools of psychotherapy to target troubling symptoms and to heal past emotional wounds as we work jointly to improve your functioning and overall quality of life. The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions I am a compassionate helper with over 30 years of experience assisting clients in overcoming a wide array of interpersonal and emotional issues impacting their overall well-being. Welcome to Encourage-ment Counseling for Connection, Healing, and Change At Encourage-ment, we help individuals and couples find hope, strength, and clarity through compassionate, expert care. Our practice specializes in three key areas: couples counseling, gambling addiction recovery, and trauma-informed therapy. Life can present challenges that feel isolating and overwhelming. Whether you're struggling in your relationship, battling the cycle of gambling, or working through the impact of trauma, we’re here to walk with you—at your pace, with respect and empathy. **Our Areas of Focus:** * **Couples Counseling** We support couples facing conflict, communication challenges, trust issues, or emotional disconnection. Our work centers on helping partners rebuild connection, improve understanding, and create stronger, healthier relationships. In addition to resolving immediate relational concerns, we help couples navigate the natural seasons of life—including marriage, career changes, aging, and loss. We also provide support for parenting challenges, helping couples stay united as they raise children, balance responsibilities, and manage stress. Whether you're new in your relationship or decades in, our goal is to help you grow together with resilience and compassion. * **Gambling Addiction Recovery** Gambling struggles can feel hidden and difficult to talk about. We provide a safe, nonjudgmental space to explore the emotional roots of gambling, develop healthier coping strategies, and rebuild your sense of control. In our work together, we focus on practical tools such as budgeting, financial planning, and managing urges to gamble. Just as important, we support clients in rebuilding trust with loved ones, repairing the emotional and relational damage often caused by gambling behavior. Healing includes both personal accountability and restoring connection—and we’re here to guide you through every step of that process. **Trauma-Informed Therapy** Trauma affects how we feel, think, and relate to others. We offer gentle, focused support using evidence-based approaches—including Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)—to help clients process distressing memories and sensations in a way that promotes rapid, lasting relief. ART uses guided imagery and eye movements to shift how trauma is stored in the brain, helping clients feel calmer, more in control, and better able to move forward. At Encourage-ment, we believe real healing begins when you feel seen, heard, and encouraged. Whether you're navigating relationship difficulties, addiction recovery, or the effects of trauma, we’re here to help you move forward—one step at a time.
