Therapists for college students near University of Pittsburgh
Going to college is very exciting and it is a great time for new experiences. However, college can also be overwhelming, anxiety-producing and stressful. These feelings are very common and there are so many people like you who are suffering in silence. I am here to listen and help you explore your feelings and emotions and feel more in control. Asking for help can be hard and by reading this you are taking the first step. I will provide a confidential, non-judgmental, and collaborative environment for you to explore your stressors and work towards making your college experience the most meaningful for you.
I empower individuals to discover their resiliency, harness the energy of their anxiety in productive ways, and better manage negative unhelpful worry thinking. Anxiety results in the space between overestimating the probability of danger AND underestimating your ability to cope with it. My philosophy for healing is that everyone has strength and resiliency to cope with much more than they could imagine, and through therapy you discover those strengths and how to implement them. I have worked with hundreds of clients in 15+ years as a licensed therapist. Having been an active duty military spouse for 20 years, I have been licensed in 6 states and have vast experience providing therapy to diverse populations in numerous settings with various needs. This led me to a path of focusing more on primary anxiety conditions (such as general anxiety, panic, phobias) to secondary anxiety (from ADHD, autism, sensory integration) to justifiable external stressors (for example, societal, environmental, financial). I use research-proven Virtual Reality Immersion Therapy (VRIT), biofeedback, mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques, Solution-Focused Therapy techniques, and other evidence based models to help clients face fears and anxieties in customized imaginal and constructed virtual environments while teaching the coping skills of mindfulness, thought restructuring, and regulating body sensations. I offer weekend and evening hours, as well as the option for secure messaging and video contact between sessions for established clients. Hi! I'm Diane, a Licensed Professional Counselor in Pennsylvania. I have experience working alongside individuals with depression, anxiety, grief/loss, and adjustment concerns. I employ an eclectic approach that includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness and problem-solving techniques, along with others, to assist you. I am not certified in a specific approach; however, I have had training and experience with each. I am grateful you have started the journey to begin mental health counseling; I can understand how scary this may be for you. I am here to help you process situations and build skills to aid you in overcoming your challenges. I believe one of my greatest strengths is building rapport to determine how to best be present for you, through empathy and active listening, in a judgment free space, and walk with you on this journey. Counseling is not a 'one size fits all' endeavor and I will spend time getting to know you to determine what best fits you as an individual.

I am passionate about helping individuals and couples grow and thrive, improving communication, working through trauma, and identifying and achieving goals. I understand that seeking therapy can be daunting, but there is hope. Whether you are experiencing relationship issues, trauma, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, low self-esteem, grief/loss, larger existential exploration or questions of identity, you don't have to work through it alone.
Great to meet you! I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 10 years of experience in the mental health field. I am deeply committed to supporting individuals and families as they navigate life’s challenges with clarity, resilience, and confidence. Throughout my career, I have worked in a variety of clinical settings, bringing a depth of knowledge, strong clinical skills, and genuine compassion to my work with clients. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies from The Pennsylvania State University in 2015 and completed my Master’s Degree in Counseling at Edinboro University in 2020. During my graduate training, I worked full-time as a school-based therapist, where I developed specialized experience supporting children and adolescents coping with trauma, anxiety, depression, and major life transitions. My graduate-level internship at Juniata College further strengthened my clinical skills with college-aged individuals, helping them manage academic pressure, identity development, relationships, and emotional wellbeing.
I am a licensed psychologist in the state of Pennsylvania, and I completed my PhD in Counseling Psychology. Student who benefit most from therapy with me are interested in learning more about themselves--their close relationships, their goals (even if they feel uncertain or lacking), and their sense of self. Perhaps you are feeling depressed, anxious, or you're currently in substantial distress due to important changes or stressors in your life. Perhaps life is going well enough, but you simply feel empty, lack meaning, or you want more out of life. Adjusting to college can be challenging, whether it be (a) moving away from home, making friends, and adjusting to academics during your first year, (b) attempting to develop or maintain a social life, or "catching up" during the "Sophomore Slump", (c) choosing an academic major, or (d) completing a Sr thesis or figuring out what you want to do after graduation. These are all common reasons that bring students into counseling with me. Exploring one's developing or conflicted sense of racial, sexual, or gender identity are other common reasons students seek psychotherapy. I strive to create a therapeutic atmosphere that is safe, nonjudgmental, and nurturing.
Do you experience hypervigilance? panic? overwhelm? avoidance? unexplained physical symptoms? Many of my clients didn't realize that their symptoms of anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and relationship struggles stem from trauma. Trauma isn't just something soldiers experience — it encompasses so many different life experiences. I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to get at the root of your symptoms, rather than putting a bandaid on them for a temporary fix. I'm trained in EMDR 2.0 and the Four Blinks Flash technique, and I use advanced EMDR software to work effectively with clients online. I also offer Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) for clients ready to go deeper when talk therapy has reached its limits, along with Internal Family Systems (IFS) and ADHD-informed therapy. I've worked extensively with people in the LGBTQ+ community. If you're interested in working together, reach out to schedule a free 15-minute consultation — we can decide if we're a good fit. You are making an amazing and brave step in your healing journey!
Navigating academic pressures, exploring identities, and experiencing new and changing relationships can be daunting amidst broader systemic challenges and the current sociopolitical climate. The fear of being met with invalidation and lack of understanding when seeking help is real. I am dedicated to providing affirming, warm, authentic and culturally responsive care, meeting you where you are to help you address your therapy goals. Together, we'll explore your healing journey through a systemic and relational lens, finding tools, coping strategies, and skills to practice that feel sustainable and empowering.

I believe that clients are experts in themselves, and the counseling process serves as a vehicle for exploration, understanding, and change. Adversity and negative past experiences are part of all of our stories, but they do not define us. Counseling gives a space to reflect into the past providing an understanding of the influence these experiences have on our lives today. Using clients' insights, strengths and resilience I support and help our clients become the people they wish to be. My favorite part of supporting client's is supporting them in self-discovery and strengthening their sense of self. I strongly believe in providing high quality services to all individuals and affirming the dignity, worth and value of all. My approach as a therapist is a person-centered approach and strength based. I am also trained in CBT and integrate different interventions to meet client needs. I strive to create an open safe space for individuals to be their authentic-self and receive acceptance, kindness, and support. My goal for you is to give you the space you deserve to show the most authentic version of yourself feeling supported and empowered. The therapeutic alliance I believe is a collaborative one because you are the only expert of you. Client's work collaboratively with me to create the goals we will work towards. By the end of treatment, I want clients to have a strengthened sense of self as well as resilience, tools and techniques. I am a recent graduate from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine earning my Master's in Mental Health Counseling. I am the proud owner of Project Rise Counseling & Advocacy. I am a pre-licensed professional which means I am supervised by a licensed professional Alisa Trout. I am more than happy to answer any questions about how that works (: I strongly believe that all individuals should have access to mental health support thus I offer sliding scale services to overcome financial barriers.
