College can be exciting, meaningful, and full of opportunity-but it can also feel overwhelming at times. If you are struggling with anxiety, stress, self-doubt, or uncertainty about your future, you don't have to navigate it alone. I enjoy working with college students and young adults in helping them manage the different life stresses that occur during these times. Therapy can provide a supportive space to better understand yourself and develop practical tools for moving forward. My approach is collaborative and evidenced based. I integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and insight-oriented therapy to help you reduce anxiety while building resilience, confidence, and self compassion. Therapy can help you quiet the constant self criticism, improve relationships, , make decisions with greater confidence, and reconnect with what matters most to you. I am licensed in California and Colorado. My physical office is in San Diego for those who prefer in-person. I also offer telemedicine appointments. Reaching out for support is a sign of strength. I would be glad to help you navigate this important chapter of your life with greater clarity, confidence, and peace

As a deeply empathetic clinician, I am honored to guide you through your mental health journey. My specialties include helping men, women, and teens navigate life changes, negative self-image, and relationships. I embrace a direct and empowering style, as I believe in the power of the therapeutic alliance, which helps me be your biggest supporter. I look forward to being that source of support for you, collaborating and growing in our work together. In our time together, you can expect a warm and safe environment tailored to your unique goals, as I’m passionate about the belief that healing happens when we feel secure enough to understand ourselves with curiosity rather than criticism. That’s why my approach is always warm, empowering, and grounded in the belief that you know yourself best. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) are two treatments we may explore to help you better understand your behaviors and feelings. My own work in therapy showed me firsthand the value in working with an empathetic therapist during times of emotional upheaval, and how empowering it can be to lean more deeply into who we are as individuals. This knowledge strengthened my commitment to providing compassionate care to each of my patients, allowing me to bring a unique perspective to every session thanks, in great part, to the breadth of my life experiences. When I’m not seeing patients, I love being outdoors with my family, learning and exploring new things (including trying new restaurants!), and watching classic movies from the 80s and 90s. I’m also an avid reader, specifically anything Agatha Christie.

Hi, I’m Joanna Lester—founder of First Circle Therapy, a Colorado-based virtual practice. I specialize in working with college and grad students who are thoughtful, creative, and sensitive—but overwhelmed by the pressure to keep it all together. If you're juggling deadlines, relationships, family expectations, and big questions about who you're becoming, you might feel anxious, unmotivated, burned out, or just not yourself. You’re not alone—and therapy can be a space to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with what really matters to you. Our work can help you move through cycles of self-doubt, people-pleasing, or perfectionism and into a more grounded, self-led life. Whether you're processing trauma, navigating identity shifts, or learning to set healthier boundaries, I offer space to explore your inner world with clarity and care. In our sessions, we’ll use nervous system tools (to help your body shift out of fight-or-flight and feel more at ease) and parts work (to help the different sides of you—like the achiever, avoider, or inner critic—work together instead of against each other). You don’t have to have it all figured out to begin. I offer free consultations to see if we’re a fit, and I accept several major insurance plans to make therapy more accessible. Feel free to reach out—no pressure.

As a compassionate therapist for individuals, couples, and families, I help diverse populations navigate anxiety, depression, attachment and relational issues, identity exploration, difficult emotions, problematic behaviors, neurodivergence, communication challenges, trauma, LGBTQIA+ issues, social isolation, self-esteem, grief and loss, substance use disorders, and eating disorders. Throughout my sessions, I take a panoramic view of the biological, psychological, social, environmental, and spiritual contexts in which each individual exists, helping to unpack internal and external barriers to wellbeing. When appropriate, I also love to explore the role of humor and creative self-expression in healing. I believe in prioritizing humility, shared power, and curiosity at all times, which allows me to be a supportive partner in discovering each person’s inner wisdom and lived contexts that guide the work. I look forward to partnering with you in this next stage of your growth journey. I specialize in systemic therapy and helping folks deepen their relationships with themselves, which often renders deeper and more authentic relationships with others. My approach is trauma-informed, holistic, and affirming, reflecting my passion for making mental health care more accessible and collaborating with each person to help them find greater joy, meaning, insight, and expansiveness, whether life feels full of tidal waves or, at times, far too still. In our work together, I strive to create a warm and empathetic space in which all patients feel truly safe, heard, and supported. Rather than aiming to “fix,” my goal is to help you access and build upon your inherent worth and the strengths you already have. This is achieved through a creative, integrative, and fluid therapeutic style based on your needs, though I lean toward an attachment-focused, psychodynamic lens. I draw heavily from narrative therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), somatic interventions, and mindfulness, but also use Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solutions-Focused Therapy, and other modalities to help you come home to yourself, find clarity and connection, and develop healthier habits. My path to becoming a therapist is informed by my own mental health journey, in addition to my lifelong interests in human connection and development, psychology, and service. After seeking treatment in my early twenties, I then intensively studied yoga and developed a greater understanding for the connection between mind, body, and spirit. Though I've lived and worked in many settings, with diverse populations, my experience as a poet in writing workshops allowed me to see the great value in creative self-exploration and expression. Being in shared spaces with others as we grappled with the deepest pockets of our hearts and minds deepened my desire to help others find themselves, find healing, and find connection. In my therapeutic practice now, I bring an open mind and careful attention to each session, believing that a foundation of trust and respect is key to the therapeutic process. Outside of work, I like to keep my body and mind active by distance running, skiing, and practicing yoga. I feel most myself when I'm outside, exploring nature, seeing live music, or sitting somewhere peaceful and writing poetry or devouring a good book. I'm also a massive word game enthusiast and jigsaw puzzler, and love to challenge my perfectionism and get creative in the kitchen. Nothing makes me happier than sharing delicious food and laughter with loved ones!

Whether you’re dealing with something specific or just know something feels off, we’re here to meet you where you are and help you move forward in a way that feels right for you.

Gen Z and Millennial women are often bombarded with difficult life transitions such as adulting, relationship distress, quarter-life crises, career pursuits, parenting, caregiving, and more. This can be a lot to manage! Societal pressures plus the changing roles of women in this age group require a focused, feminist, and knowledgable approach. It can be tricky searching for the right therapist, so I appreciate you being here in the first place. My approach is fine-tuned, using radical genuineness, to help you learn how to manage these unique stressors while maintaining authenticity and calm. I am practiced in several targeted therapies that meet the needs of women in transition including mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy, and ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy). In my personal experience, I have come to view change as the only constant, which is why I find great value in being able to help my clients through significant life transitions. Looking back at the clients I've served over the years, I have been able to find something about every one of them that I admire. I love meeting my clients where they are and seeing how I can support their walk through life in a genuine, non-judgmental, and meaningful way. If this sounds like the right approach for you, feel free to reach out for a phone consult.
