It is a privilege to hear a person’s life story and help them heal, grow, and navigate through challenges. I often utilize the relationship between mind and body to aid in becoming the healthiest version of oneself, mentally, emotionally, and physically. I have worked in Community Mental Health settings for the last 13 years doing crisis work, assessments, and therapy. I am currently the therapist for the Mental Health Court in Clinton County and working at Therapy Today part-time. In the past, I worked in various outpatient and residential settings with adolescents, adults, and couples. I did conflict resolution with Friend of the Court participants in West Michigan.

Marriage & Family Therapist

Kerry has extensive experience working with individuals, couples, and families looking to improve themselves and their relationships. She sees success in working from a systemic approach where even if she is working with an individual will related their experiences and behavior to the system in which they have been or are currently involved. Kerry helps clients better understand their pasts and helps shape their futures by pointing out patterns that have developed in her clients lives as well as their families and family history. Kerry likes working from a client centered perspective so while destructive patterns may be pointed out and even changed, it will happen at the client's comfort level. Destructive patterns can trickle down through families and into future relationships. Kerry can assist with the discovery and alteration of such patterns to work towards a better future for an individual, couple relationship and even families.

Starting therapy is a huge step towards bettering yourself, and taking that leap of faith to begin this journey is the beginning stage of healing. I would be extremely privileged and feel so honored to walk alongside you during this journey. I will do my best to provide you with the skills and strategies that you are looking for in order to better your well-being. I take into account everyone’s individual backgrounds in order to develop the most effective treatment for you, and to allow you to feel safe and heard. I am a Limited Licensed Professional Counselor, and received my undergraduate degree in Social Work from Grand Valley State University, and my Master’s degree in Counseling Education with an emphasis in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Western Michigan University. In the past I have worked with clients ages 7 and up, who are struggling with life transitions, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other challenges. I specialize in working with students who feel overwhelmed by anxiety, who feel too "in their head", and who struggle to take control of their own thoughts. During our work together, we'll help you to feel more confident, more connected with the people around you, and more ready to take on life's challenges. Our sessions will be highly structured. We'll learn a meditative technique that will help you to disrupt patterns of rumination, helping you to feel more relaxed and clear-headed. At the end of our sessions, we'll reflect on takeaways and set intentions for our next session. Finally, we'll use screeners and regular check-ins to assess our progress over time. I've helped hundreds of clients overcome their anxiety and lead fuller, more meaningful lives. If you feel that my methods would help you, please reach out to schedule an intake session. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you!

Do you often feel weighed down by feelings of stress, anxiety or depression? Are overwhelming emotions, thoughts, and behaviors interfering with your daily functioning or relationships? Perhaps you were diagnosed with a serious disease/illness, struggling with grief and loss, or suffering from chronic pain? Sometimes life can be overwhelming to the point that you feel stuck or you find it difficult to cope. I am here to help you address a range of issues, overcome obstacles, and embrace a new journey of growth and healing. I offer a warm, empathetic, non-judgmental approach in a safe environment for you to share your innermost thoughts and feelings that are consuming your mind. You will learn new ways to manage challenging emotions and complex thought-processes, adjust to life changes, improve connections with others, and learn other tools to help achieve better mental and emotional well-being. I am passionate about helping others by creating a therapeutic alliance with my clients to offer support and work collaboratively to create goals unique to their needs to improve their quality of life and help restore functioning. I have five years of clinical experience supporting adults to reduce emotional stress and symptoms resulting from challenging life experiences. I have worked in multiple settings: in private practice I have worked with individuals with depression, anxiety, anger/mood issues, and low self-esteem; in Community Mental Health I have provided case management and psychotherapy with older adults with severe and persistent mental illness such as depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar with medical comorbidity; in medical settings, including a veterinary hospital in which I worked with end of life issues and facilitated a pet grief/loss support group; as well as a Family Reunification Program and substance abuse treatment, both with individuals and groups.

My approach begins with the understanding that connecting with one’s self and others is a pathway toward finding meaning and fulfillment. This pathway of connecting can become blocked by old emotional wounds or current relationship struggles. The partnership formed in the therapy relationship becomes the platform where healing broken connections may occur. This approach can help bring about lasting change by getting at the ‘root’ of the problem and bring relief from symptoms. Central to Chris’ approach is a concern for the role that faith and belief play in the life of the patient. My practice is shaped by his time training at Northwestern University, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, and the Center for Religion and Psychotherapy of Chicago. My approach to working to help people change comes primarily from a model for psychotherapy where tending to feelings, symptoms, and patterns of relating become an important part of the healing process. In our first conversation, you can expect to briefly discuss your concerns as well as setting up an initial meeting. The first meeting is where your concerns and history are better understood in order to offer specific recommendations and feedback.
