Therapists for college students near Duke University
In my practice, I see college students and young adults for a variety of issues including, but not limited to, depression, anxiety, stress, transitions/major life decisions, and career concerns. I provide individual counseling using solution-focused and cognitive therapies. I also employ a whole-person process approach to career counseling so that all factors are considered when making vocational decisions. I strive to provide my clients with a safe, nonjudgmental environment to understand themselves better and move toward a fulfilling life. I often learn as much from my clients as they do from me and I consider therapy a highly collaborative process.
Anxiety, stress, and sadness are a normal part of life. At times these feelings can take over and inhabit multiple area's of life in a profoundly negative way. As a therapist, I offer an empathetic, non-judgmental, supportive, and encouraging space for emerging and young adults to explore area's of life that feel off. I work with my clients to understand the unique experiences brought to counseling. Treating someone as a person, not a diagnosis that needs to be fixed is essential in healing.

We believe that all people deserve to be treated with kindness, dignity, and respect. We also think the world would be a better place if everyone else believed this too (but that’s just us- we aren’t trying to impose our values on you). To that end, we ask that clinicians, admin staff, and fellow clients be treated with the same kindness, dignity, and respect you would offer to the person or animal (because let’s be honest, sometimes animals are easier to treat well) you love the most. And, we expect ourselves to provide that to you. If ever something rubs you the wrong way or doesn’t feel like it matches this value, please let us know, and we will work to hear you, develop an understanding of where you are coming from, and try to resolve the situation until you feel your needs have been met. If that’s not possible, we will talk to you about options for the next steps.

I consider myself fortunate to be able to work in a profession that I truly love and I consider a privilege to be invited into my clients' inner lives, and to travel this journey with them through healing, change, and self-empowerment. College can bring a lot: new freedom, pressure to succeed, and the stress of figuring out who you are and where you are headed. Many of the students I work with feel weighed down by anxiety, burnout, overthinking, imposter syndrome, or the pressure to be perfect. Others are coping with ADHD, past/current trauma, anxiety and social anxiety or just the everyday stress of classes, relationships, and big transitions. With 12 years of experience working in university counseling centers, I have a deep understanding of the unique challenges of college and graduate students' lives. In our work together, you will find a supportive space to talk honestly about what is on your mind, learn coping tools to manage stress, and feel more grounded and confident. My goal is to help you feel less alone and more able to handle the challenges of college life.

Many of the students I work best with share a common thread: they feel overwhelmed by the transition of college life and want a safe place to sort through it all. Some are managing anxiety, stress, or burnout from balancing classes, work, and relationships. Others are navigating questions of identity, independence, or self-confidence. What they all have in common is a desire for a supportive space where they can be honest about what’s hard and learn tools to feel more grounded. My approach is down-to-earth and collaborative, so if you’re looking for someone who understands the challenges of student life and wants to walk with you through them, you might find a good fit here.
