Therapists for college students near Duke University
Hi! I'm Cristina Snipes of Under the Willow Counseling, located in Raleigh, NC. I've been a therapist for about 15 years and really enjoy working with students. I believe that therapy at it's best is done as a team, so my goal is to provide a supportive, relaxed and comfortable environment, while also guiding (and sometimes nudging!) you through the therapeutic process. By offering kind and compassionate care every step of the way, I will ease the daunting process of beginning and continuing individual therapy, hopefully meeting the end goals you're looking for. Please feel free to reach out with any questions. I'd be happy to chat over the phone prior to scheduling an appointment. Looking forward to hearing from you!
Over the last 20+ years, I have helped children, adolescents, and adults of all ages discover new skills and healthy coping strategies to overcome trauma, stress, anxiety, and depression. My counseling style is warm and interactive. I believe that everyone has a need to be heard without judgment. As a result, I practice active listening, treating everyone with respect, dignity, sensitivity, and compassion. I acknowledge the amount of courage it takes to recognize the need to pursue a more fulfilling and happier life and to take the first steps toward change. My technique combines cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness, a solution-focused approach, motivational interviewing, and client-centered counseling. Our dialog and your treatment plan will be adapted to meet your unique and specific needs. I believe you deserve to live a healthier happier life. If you are ready to take that first step onto a healing pathway, know that you do not have to take it alone. I am here to support and empower you. I look forward to cheering you on as you embrace a new chapter of your life.
Let me ask you a few questions. Let me know if any of this applies to you. Do you often find yourself feeling tired, stressed out, overwhelmed at work, unable to focus, or constantly feeling you need a break? How about this, when you finally take a break or vacation you notice that you don't enjoy the time away because there is a laundry list of thingsĀ you feel you should be doing or need to get done before you can relax? Have you found that you have a hard time getting to sleep or staying asleep because you are thinking or worrying about any and everything when you just need to get some rest? IF any of this is you, when would you like to get started working with me?
Life can be hard. You may feel unsure and question if counseling can be helpful to you. You feel easily overwhelmed and struggle to open up to others around you about what you are feeling. You have a tendency to take on too much and have high expectations for yourself that are hard to live up too. I'm here to tell you that counseling can help! I specialize in treating young adults like yourself who struggle to manage the stressors of college life and are seeking better ways to cope. I offer a holistic approach including skill building with breath work, yoga, meditation and mindfulness to help improve your ability to handle overwhelming emotions and feel more centered. Reach out to day for a free 20 minute consultation!
If you're here, part of you is ready for something to change. You might be dealing with anxiety that won't let up, burnout from trying to keep up with everything on your plate, or motivation that seems to have disappeared right when you need it most. Or maybe you're someone who feels things intensely, or struggles to start tasks and follow through. Some days it might feel like you're managing everyone else's expectations more than your own. I work with college and graduate students, especially women, who are navigating these kinds of challenges alongside the pressures of school. Many of my clients are highly sensitive or neurodivergent, or are starting to wonder if they might be. I also work with students carrying attachment wounds, old patterns from family or past relationships that keep showing up in new relationships, whether with friends, partners, or roommates. I have experience working with students adjusting to a new environment, whether that's the transition into college life, a new culture, or being far from home for the first time. If you're Spanish-speaking or navigating life between cultures, I offer sessions in Spanish and bring real understanding of that experience into our work together. My approach is grounded in Internal Family Systems (IFS), which helps you get to know the different parts of yourself, like the part that worries, the part that pushes you to keep going no matter what, or the part that shuts down when things feel like too much. You don't have to have it all figured out to reach out. Together, we work with these parts with curiosity and compassion, so you can feel calmer, more confident, and more like yourself.
Are you the person that everyone else comes to for help, but you donāt quite know how to help yourself? Do you struggle with burnout at school or work, even though it's something you love? Is your loved one in the middle of a crisis, but you're not sure how to best support them while also protecting your peace? If any of these ring true, know that you've already taken the first step to help yourself by seeking therapy. Through our work together, we will develop a comprehensive plan that allows you to move towards what you want, rather than away from what you fear. I offer individual therapy that incorporates a range of therapeutic perspectives, tailored to your needs. Our sessions might include mindfulness, breath work, or other exercises that enhance the mind-body connection. I view therapy as one tool among many that you can use to help yourself, after spending so many years of your life helping others. Whether this is your first time starting therapy, or you're returning after some time away, I am honored that you're considering me. Our work together could be for a brief time (6-8 sessions) or longer term; it just depends on what works best for you!

Working with me means gaining practical coping skills and tools you can start using right away. I rely on my background in psychology to implement cognitive and behavioral changes. I use scientifically supported methods like CBT, DBT, exposure, and mindfulness skills to create real, lasting changes. Our sessions will go beyond exploration and reflection ā therapy with me is not 'just talking.' It feels great to vent, but it feels even better to have a path forward. I will gently confront and challenge you when I notice you might be holding yourself back. We all have a tendency to lean into old patterns and unproductive coping skills, especially when itās all you know. Iām here to hold you accountable and help you grow in a supportive, respectful, and nonjudgmental way.

I like to take a collaborative approach as I truly believe that you are the only person who has overcome your experiences and understands how they have impacted you. Through the integration of treatment modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, and strengths-based perspective, I would to assist you in identifying your own strengths and intrinsic motivation to continue overcoming and managing stressors that contribute to your mental health. Let's get to work on your healing journey together!
As a counselor, my professional identity is one of authenticity, curiosity, and empathy. I care deeply about helping my clients improve their lives. I believe that starts with the two of us forming a genuine connection so that I can best understand your personality, your worldview, and the problems you are facing ā the world can be a tough place and we all have times when we could use someone to listen and understand us. I will repeatedly check in with you to assess your goals for therapy and make sure that we are making progress towards meeting those goals. In our sessions, I will use techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you identify and reduce the types of thinking that can lead to negative emotions. I will also incorporate other techniques such as mindfulness meditation that many clients find useful. Together, we will work as a team to confront the issues that are troubling you. I received my BS in Biology from Duke University and my MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of the Cumberlands. I've also been a research assistant in Princeton University's departments of social psychology and neuroscience. I try to stay up to date with current research and use only empirically validated modalities with my clients.
